Information Technology

In today's fast paced and demanding business environment, information technology is essential for efficient management of organizational operations and for maintaining high levels of customer service. Information Technology committed to be implemented in Pakistan particularly by the Government of Pakistan to drive maximum benefits and good governance, to achieve cost of effectiveness, increase in revenue and quality services, leading to improve efficiency and customer satisfaction. To keep pace with technology, Pakistan Railway's Management setup Directorate of Information Technology in 2002 to materialized the above objectives.

Directorate of Information Technology is headed by the Director and assisted by three Deputy Directors Incharge of Software Development, Networking/Hardware and Computer Operation which are IT experts, inducted from the IT Industry.

A State of the art Data Centre is setup at Headquarter Office, Lahore. The data Centre plays a pivotal role to control the overall system of Pakistan Railway over the network and provide broad based vision to the management authorities for making timely and appropriate decision. Divisional Server Rooms are also setup at Karachi, Quetta, Rawalpindi, Multan, Moghalpura.

Pakistan Railway website (pakrail.gov.pk) is available world wide including tender advertisements, latest News, Job opportunities, Seat availability and general information about Pakistan Railways. The seat availability status for reservation in all trains is also available. Efforts are still going on to make this site more informative and helpful.
The fare Management System has also been developed, and right now IT Directorate is in a position to update the fare for all classes of all trains as and when required. Automated fare increases and fare manuals are also produced by this system. This standardized fare system manages the passenger reservations and ticketing system.
Directorate of Information Technology Railway Headquarters Office, Lahore is imparting computer training to officers and staff. The basic ideology of this training is to facilitate the users to use the computer in their offices in the effective way. At present the batches of Accounts department of the revenue department and Mechanical department are being facilitated with the training of Office automation. These classes will continue until the entire staff of Pakistan Railway is properly trained so that they may derive maximum benefit from the very purpose of computerization.

Before the computerization of Ticketing System at the above stated stations, the vast majority of passengers could not purchase their tickets in advance for return reservation. After the automation, passengers can well plan their journey before commencing and may purchase return tickets.
At present the automated payroll is being used for 85.000 employees of Pakistan Railways. Payroll System since its development has been generating monthly pay slips ( Salary Bills ) from the Railway Headquarters Office Lahore. The IT Directorate has started its decentralization to the divisional IT centres and factories including General Store Mughalpura. The main Payroll Server has been installed at Headquarters Office which will be equipped with data backups of all divisions and will contain the historical data in a true sense of data mining: this will be used for the analyzing of employees getting the pay in different divisions. The proper disaster and recovery procedures have been laid down.
For the meaningful implementation of IT Project networking is the essential tool which Provide connectivity to the entire locations spread over the entire system of Pakistan Railway. Major Offices of Pakistan Railway Headquarters Office Lahore has been completed providing 450 nodes over CAT-6 Cable State of the art CISCO Core Switches, Firewall and Edge switches Internet facility using DSL connections. Divisional IT centers at Peshawar and Karachi, along with sixteen reservations and ticketing offices, are networked with the data center, HQ, Lahore using WAN ( Wide area network), sharing applications and databases.
